The Blooming Prairie Fire Department is made up of 28 Fire Fighters who volunteer their time to extinguish fires. The Fire Department also responds to certain medicals when needed as well as motor vehicle accidents where extrication is needed. The members are required to take 120 hours of classroom training to be certified at Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 levels, as well as continuing education. Once a month the Fire Fighters are required to attend training to keep their skills sharpened.
We work closely with the Blooming Prairie Police Department, Steele County Sheriff's Office, Freeborn County Sheriff's Office, Mower County Sheriff's Office and Dodge County Sheriff's Office. We also work with the Blooming Prairie Ambulance Service as well as with other surrounding community emergency services. The reason for working with so many different agencies is due to the city being the only city in Minnesota located at the corners of four different counties. The Fire Department currently has 8 Fire Apparatus that they use for fires and rescue operations.
We also have 1 Rescue Sled that is pulled behind a snowmobile for winter rescues. We have 1 Pumper Truck, 1 Rescue Truck, 1 Ladder Truck, 2 Tanker Trucks, and 3 Grass Trucks. The department has been given an ISO Class Rating of 6 out of 10.
The department can only take on 30 Fire Fighters at one time due to regulations. But, if you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a Fire Fighter for the Blooming Prairie Fire Department, contact City Hall for information.
